Kirby’s Top 5 Hot Fall Trends for 2012

1.)    Tiny touches of metallic:
Borrowed & Blue Events - Small Batch Cookery
Add in your Choice of metallic - whether it be gold, silver or gilver (Thanks Rachel Zoe for the verbiage), a touch of this in your decor will go a long way!

2.)    Brighten it up with Candles:
Borrowed & Blue Events - Lauren Cardwell Photography
Use candles to create a romantic reception area for your guests to enjoy.  They can also serve as centerpieces or you can use them as simple decoration to dress up any venue.

3.)    Stick to your theme with warm colored flowers:
Fall Wedding Ideas
Pick a combination of flowers that are burnt orange, auburn and red mixed with a brighter orange and golden yellow.  The mix of all these colors creates for a bouquet made perfectly for a fall bride!

4.)    Accessorize your wedding dress:
Ciara Richardson
Add warm colored accessories to accentuate the fall colors in your decorations.  This also gives the dress character and originality!

5.)    Keep it simple with your bridesmaids dresses:
Elizabeth Anne Designs
Choosing a neutral color, beige, ivory or pearl white, creates a classy look.  They also pair nicely with warm, dark color theme of oranges, reds and burgundys.

That's all for now with my 2012 forecast!  Happy Holidays!

www - what?

In 338 days it will be my beautiful sister’s wedding day! Naturally her wedding plans have been a hot topic with family, friends and anyone who will listen.  Her wedding website is one topic of conversation that has brought out a surprising reaction. “You have a website for your wedding? Oh my gosh…so cheesy!” is the general reaction when some of our family and friends heard of her website. Well welcome to the 21st century!  People make wedding websites?  OF COURSE! There are over 250 million websites out there so weddings joined the World Wide Web party. Why make a wedding website? Allow me to explore some perks.

The first perk is a no brainer; a website gets information out to guests!  Everything a guest needs to know about venue locations, lodging, times, attire, directions, etc. is easily accessible.  With around 150 guests expected at the 11/10/12 wedding, I know at least one will lose their invitation.  Before you call and overwhelm someone on such a hectic day, whip out your Smartphone, all the information you need is right on the website!

Whether you think of it this way or not, the wedding website is another element of the overall wedding design.  The website should tie along with the wedding theme and the couples personality so guests get a good vibe of the wedding up to 300ish days before the big day!  I’m ALWAYS a fan of another way to show creativity ;)

Another perk - a website can tell your story; where you met, how you met, how long you dated your fiancé, the engagement and the honeymoon.  All the basics of your relationship and journey to marriage that people love to know but might not get the chance to hear from you can easily be found on the web. My sister even included a page for her beloved dogs that she got with her fiancé.  I don’t know if everyone in our huge family knew she has dogs, but now they do!  It’s fun for guests to learn a little more about the couple before witnessing the “I do”.

Finally, what does every bride want out of her big day? A day she will never forget!  Sure the video and professional photo album will stay in the couple’s home forever, but what if you want to reminisce while at work or when you’re out of town? What about the friends and family who weren’t lucky enough to attend the big event?  Once again, that’s what the website is for. Anybody can log on to flip through the pictures long after the wedding is over.  Once the wedding day has passed the website acts as a keepsake to preserve the special moments only captured at a wedding.

So here’s the deal, get with the program and make a website for your wedding. Have fun with it and make it unique to you and your fiancé. Trust me; you will certainly be helping your guests out as well!

Blessings

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, there is much to be grateful for.  Every day I am grateful to have such an AMAZING business partner and team of OUTSTANDING event assistants.  I can’t believe how lucky I am!  The team around me supports me, motivates me and helps make Borrowed & Blue better each day!

Planning a wedding is hard work.  Nothing about this business is as easy or glamorous as one may think.  But, the days without having time to eat or sleep leading up to a wedding, the stress you take on so the bride and groom don't have to, the worry and the butterflies of nervousness all go away when you are able to make a couples dreams come true.  The hard work is definitely worth it in the end.

In this industry, you can’t please everyone.  When it comes to weddings, there are a lot of emotions and opinions involved.  The risks are high but the reward is higher.  So today I am thankful for my happy brides, grooms and their families.  I am thankful that they all have kept us in their life and that they continue to praise Borrowed & Blue at every turn.  Without their smiling faces and words of encouragement, BB would not be as successful as it is today.  SO THANK YOU for letting us share in your special day.  We will be forever grateful to each and every one of you.  <3

Mashtini?

Last week I had the pleasure of attending my cousin’s wedding in the BEAUTIFUL city of Destin, Florida. If I wasn’t already ecstatic about being in the sunshine state for a beach wedding, my excitement sky-rocketed when I saw martini glasses! Open bar with beer, wine AND martinis? Count me in! I received an even greater shock when my sister sat down for dinner with her martini glass filled with … mashed potatoes?

Come to find out there was a mashed potato bar, mashtinis anybody? Guests had their choice of buttermilk mashed, roasted garlic, or sweet potatoes with a variety of delicious toppings to add on. I thought it was definitely a great idea that guests could get creative with and enjoy. And let’s be honest, mashed potatoes are the only acceptable substitute for an Appletini.

Photo Booth? YES PLEASE!

This past weekend we worked with the fantastic folks from Southern Exposure Photo Booth!  Not only did we think the ladies were the sweetest things ever, their photo booth made my day!  It wasn’t gaudy, it didn’t take away from the glam décor, and like expected – it was a BIG HIT with the wedding party!  They even handed over the scrap book for the bride and groom that night without me having to chase them down!  I highly recommend them and know I will be using them again ASAP!  Check out our lovely wedding assistants looking fancy in the booth ;)

Love these silly assistants of ours more and more each event!  I REALLY DON’T KNOW what we would do without them!! Glad to know they enjoyed the photo booth, too! =)

It's all about the money, HONEY!

Is it possible to get high from saving money?!

I grew up poor and started learning about saving money at a very young age.  I started working when I was 14 and now have the ability to make a buck stretch a mile!  I never thought I’d appreciate being broke as much as I do now that I own a business that specializes in saving money!

One thing that erks my nerves is the misconception that wedding planners are an added expense.  If you find a GOOD wedding planner (cough, cough – a BBE wedding planner) they should SAVE you money!  A lot of brides, in an attempt to save, will skip the wedding planner but end up spending double what they could have paid if they had only hired someone who knows all the shortcuts and all the savings in town.

Here’s a perfect example.  We have a bride who LOVES the look of pipe & drape and the dramatic effect it creates.  To rent pipe & drape for her wedding, it would have cost her $3,000.  Um, no thank you.  But Jenny and I couldn’t rest until we figured out a way to give her exactly what she wanted.  We don’t like the idea of brides sacrificing their vision over money.  Therefore, we’ve spent our week hauling cement, figuring measurements and playing engineer.  Our bride is getting exactly what she wants for about $300.  Yep – that’s a $2,700 savings!

Ahh – what a good feeling! And that’s only PART of the savings!  That doesn’t count all the other secret ways we've helped her save ;)

My back is achy, my knees are sore, but the pipe & drape is GORGEOUS!  We’ll be sharing final product photos soon!  In the meantime, check out our hard work!

Our little helper, Minnie!

Those crazy drawings make sense to us - that's all that matters =)

Sierra looking at us like we're nuts.  Well... maybe a little ;)

Vintage Dreams.

I have a reputation around here. One that I don’t mind --- I am a vintage junkie. I have a little thing for anything made before 1985. I thrift and vintage shop at least once a week. I rarely buy new furniture, and relish painting, sanding, and re-purposing one of a kind pieces to scatter throughout my house.   I love digging through the junk bins and pulling out a fabulous clutch that I know no one else will have. Even my engagement ring is vintage, straight from the 1920's, discovered at a fabulous estate sale. What can I say? I love old things and I love being completely unique.

The vintage trend isn’t a new concept in the wedding world, the whole “something borrowed” thing kinda set that notion in stone. However, there is something I am absolutely loving right now.

The brooch bouquet..........

I just think they are gorgeous, unique, and a perfect way to showcase your heritage, your style, and bring something borrowed onto the main stage.

Here are a few examples of brooch bouquets that make me want to march down the aisle again!

Meet LIZ!

Have we mentioned how much we love our assistants?! These girls are the most hard-working, sassy, BEAUTIFUL, dependable girls on the PLANET!  We literally could not live without them in our lives!  Often on event days these girls are seen running around or on a ladder, so we want to make sure you get a chance to know them on a more personal level!

Sparkleriffic

Getting ready for an upcoming photo shoot with the always amazing Lauren Cardwell, I've added a new addition to my closet - and it's one word: SPARKLERIFFIC! Call me girly, call me silly, call me dramatic for even purchasing such a dress, but I am SO OBSESSED I may sleep with it on tonight.

Jenny will in true Jenny fashion, show up to our photo shoot in a polar opposite ensemble consisting of an arm full of bangles and some hot thrifted outfit!  These photos are going to be so much fun and a true reflection of our oh so different (but oh so good together) personalities.  If you guys didn't know, I am in love with my business partner =)

Can't wait to share the photos with you all!!

Welcome to my life, Nutella Icing

Jenny and I met with Small Batch Cookery last night for a cake tasting with one of our fabulous brides and grooms.  Like always, Small Batch had a beautiful display (they never disappoint).  And like always, they had DELICIOUS cakes for us to try.  Every single time I sit down with Small Batch, they give me something better than the last time (how do they do that?!)

Now let me set the scene – I’m the kind of girl that gets a cupcake, takes the icing off, and eats the bottom of the cupcake.  I hate icing.  I always have.  And really, I don’t LOVE cake that much either.  If I have to eat it though, it’s getting naked first.

Jennifer Merryman, from Small Batch, has LITERALLY changed my outlook on cake.  Not only do I have to stop myself from shoving every sample piece of cake into my mouth, I have to legit hold back from licking the icing out of the bowls!

Last night I was introduced to the new love of my life – NUTELLA ICING!  I might have cried if my bride and groom didn’t pick it for their big day!  Everything was so wonderful, our bride and groom ended up picking 4 different cake flavors – now THAT has to tell you how good everything was =)

Now for me, I’m going to say a little prayer to the cake gods and hope a Nutella Icing topped cake finds its way to my desk in the near future (hint, hint!)

Shoes!!!

We are LONG PAST THE DAYS of white satin shoes that are dyed to match our gowns!!  (Barf bag please!)  What you wear with your dress is a detail not to overlook!

Bridesmaids should be pretty too!  Bridesmaids are the ultimate wedding accessory!  What they wear and how polished they are sets the tone for the wedding straight out of the gate!  PLEASE don’t put them at the alter with a ghetto pair of flip flops!  Here are some ideas to get inspired by:

Table 6 Productions
The Daily Wedding Blog

Penny Candy

Show your personality!  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t buy the first pair of white shoes you can find because you want them to match your wedding dress.  Really think about it – how many pairs of white shoes have you seen that were legit cute?  Use your shoes as a way to show your personality and bring out the flavor of the wedding.   Here are some super fun looks:

I will admit, I’m a sucker for shoes, so maybe I’m a little biased about their importance!  But, if you want your wedding to WOW, every details counts - even the details on your 10 little piggies!
